During the Early Bronze age, none could switch on the light as easy as today!
Lighting is something that we certainly take for granted today. We flick a switch and voilà, wehave light! If we want add to the atmosphere of a dinner party, we light candles for ambiance. And all these are because of today’s technology and invention in the field of electronic and related fields, but in the ancient world, it was quite different. No switches, no electricity running through the walls of every dwelling.
The Early Bronze Age sees the first creation bowls made more suited to their nightly task as oil lamps. The bases of the bowl were now flattened to provide greater stability to be based easily and stable. The rim was folded over in four equally spaced areas to provide enough lighting all around the four sides of the lamp. In these lamps the quality and size varied from those that had thin walls and almost perfectly formed pinched nozzles.
This apparenty simple potter’s achievement was in fact a giant step towards progress: starting then and for almost 4000 years, men will use… oil lamps!
